Celebrating Four Years of Wordsmiths

24/8/2021

"Anniversaries are often times to ask pertinent questions.

For every multi-Doctor event, we find ourselves, whether reader or creator, discussing what Doctor Who means to us now and when we first arrived on the scene. For myself, as an editor/writer, the programme began with a few glimpses of two schoolteachers in a junkyard. A handful of images that led to my first real engagement with the show, the first ever Dalek story. That quiet, frightening saga on the surface of Skaro solidified everything I loved about Doctor Who. All its virtues. Quickly, as word travels, we're reminded that everyone has a story like that. A key moment. A nexus point. Each giving a unique and valuable perspective that fuels the energies we use to create and imagine.

After four years,
Divergent Wordsmiths continues to be an eye-opening experience. Writing is not a solitary vocation. It can certainly feel that way, somtimes, but the reality far from expectation. So many people being willing and able to volunteer their time is nothing short of triumphant. Our writers, editors and artists, whether past, present or emerging are extraordinary.

In our time, we have created Main Stories:
  • Unbound Imaginings: Volume 1 (2018)
  • Genesis of Terror (2019)
  • The Paul Spragg ReCollections Anthology (2019)
  • The Meaning of Big Finish (2019)
  • Unbound Imaginings: Volume 2 (2020)
  • Eden By Annihilation (2020)

Contributed to Theories on the Doctor Who universe(s):
  • The Whiskey-Wolfie Theory: "Loom or Womb?"
  • How Many Times Did the Doctor Run Away?
  • Cyberman Origins
  • Gallifrey Historia: "Trial by Ordeal"
  • Gallifrey Historia: "Romana's Reconciliation"

And shared the odd bit of delightful Addenda:
  • "A Christmas Cutaway" -- by Iain McLaughlin
  • Go to 6: "The Lost Gamebooks"

Main stories, theories and addenda, all alongside several additional Easter Eggs hidden throughout our regular content. Aided by our regular stable of contributors, but also the efforts of professional Doctor Who alumni such as:
  • Iain McLaughlin (Erimem)
  • Tony Jones (Companion Chronicle Tactics of Defeat)
  • Ian Atkins (Big Finish's Short Trips)
  • Joshua Wanisko (Short Trip Forever Fallen)
  • Iain Robertson (Big Finish release covers)
  • And the mysterious persona(s) of Big Finish Twitter.

We've not such a strict division between fan and professional, either. We also have at least two of our own Wordsmiths transition into the professional sphere:
  • J.A. Prentice (Bernice Summerfield's The Undying Truth)
  • Ethan Gibson (Influencing the Doctor)
Our very first writer and one of our first editors. There, at the very beginning, when 200,000+ words of writing was only a dream.
Whether you are just starting out or have been part of creative writing for some time, Divergent Wordsmiths is the place to go. Our community of authors, editors and artists stretches across multiple continents. Always welcoming. Always willing to help. Each contributing a small piece of their own creativity, that spirit of adventure, and letting it turn from a gestating chrysalis to a fully-grown butterfly. Creatures that with one beat of their wings can change the nature of cause and effect in the passage of Time.

Why do we matter? Because we are unique as each regeneration that opens their eyes to the universe. We are travellers in Space and Time. We don't have a TARDIS (probably), but that doesn't stop us. We are proof, if proof were ever needed, that a bit of wonder, mystery and curiosity, rather than tyranny, cruelty and villainy, can enrich whichever world we step into next. We write stories by fans, for fans. For you. This anniversary is dedicated to all of us.

Let's see what's out there, shall we?"
